Developed by the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), the IDEALSM model identifies the phases and steps that are necessary to effective process improvement.
Process improvement doesn’t just happen. Like developing software, improving processes requires a carefully reasoned and disciplined approach. The CMMI® identifies the steps along the path of process maturity, but it does not address how to make the progress you need. The IDEAL model fills this gap by providing a solid process for process improvement.
The IDEAL model is cyclical, which implies continuous process improvement. That is, we achieve regular and continuous improvement by continuing to go through the cycle of initiating, diagnosing, establishing, acting and leveraging.
