Developing systems is an inherently risky venture; but that risk can be identified, managed, and sometimes turned to benefits.
The Capability Maturity Model Integration® (CMMI®) makes Risk Management its own Process Area (at Maturity Level 3 of the staged representation). Risk identification, prioritization and mitigation must be part of project planning, or the plan is of questionable value. Risks then must be tracked and reassessed as the project moves forward, because they will come and go, and their impact will change as work progresses and the environment changes.
